In a tweet early Monday morning, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee praised President Donald J. Trump for opening the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem, “the rightful capital of Israel,” saying “@realDonaldTrump had the guts” to follow the law.
“By LAW, our embassy is supposed to be in Jerusalem, the rightful capital of Israel,” wrote Gov. Mike Huckabee on his Twitter page. “It’s that @realDonaldTrump had the guts to follow that law.”
Former Gov. Mike Huckabee’s comments came after CNN suggested the United States was going to “break with tradition” in moving the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem on May 14, 2018.
Huckabee criticized CNN’s tweet early Monday:
“Breaking wind from CNN! Do these guys even know difference between LAW and tradition? By LAW, our embassy is supposed to be in Jerusalem, the rightful capital of Israel. It’s that @realDonaldTrump had the guts to follow that law. I’m in Israel fo event, wonder if CNN will be?”
President Trump’s decision to move the embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem comports with the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995, albeit nearly 19 years late.
The Act states in relevant part the following:
“(1) Jerusalem should remain an undivided city in which the rights of every ethnic and religious group are protected; (2) Jerusalem should be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel; and (3) the United States Embassy in Israel should be established in Jerusalem no later than May 31, 1999.”
