Bill Maher, host of “Real Time With Bill Maher” on HBO, said Friday that he hopes the U.S. economy will crash so that he can get rid of President Donald Trump.

“I feel like the bottom has to fall out at some point," Maher said. "By the way, I'm hoping for it because one way you get rid of Trump is a crashing economy. So please, bring on the recession."

"Sorry if that hurts people but it's either root for a recession or you lose your democracy," Maher added.

Maher isn’t the first liberal to wish Trump would fail at his presidency.

As Newsbusters reported, in 2016 Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson said, “I wish the president-elect failure on his cruel initiatives.”

Conversely, in 2009 conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh famously said he hoped then President Barack Obama fails.

“If I wanted Obama to succeed, I'd be happy the Republicans have laid down, and I would be encouraging Republicans to lay down and support him. Look, what he's talking about is the absorption of as much of the private sector by the US government as possible, from the banking business, to the mortgage industry, the automobile business, to health care. I do not want the government in charge of all of these things. I don't want this to work. So I'm thinking of replying to the guy, "Okay, I'll send you a response, but I don't need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails."
