(CNSNews.com)-- "Isolating the United States and seeing NATO dissolve" is "exactly what China wants," Retired Lt. Col. James Carafano told Fox News host Mark Levin Sunday on "Life, Liberty & Levin." "China wants a weakened and divided Europe that isolates the United States because the one thing that China and Russia and Iran all have in common is it’s a zero-sum game for them."

Levin interviewed Carafano, who is also a Heritage Foundation vice president and made the case for why the U.S. is faced with a bigger threat in 2022 than was posed by the Soviet Union at the start of former President Ronald Reagan's administration.

"If you take the combined military power and strategic threats of Iran, China, and Russia, and you add in the economic power that China brings to the table, that’s actually a bigger threat than the Soviet Union was to the West. And this is at a time when our demographics are shrinking, the economic competitions have never been greater, our technological edge's slipped, the military force ratios have slipped. So, I don’t mean to be Chicken Little on this, but the reality is if you just put all the numbers on the table, the threat that America faces today to its freedom and prosperity is probably greater than it was when Ronald Reagan came into office in the 1980s. I just think it’s that stark.”

Below is a transcript of this portion of the segment:

Mark Levin: “Let’s take a look at the big picture here. What is the big picture here?”

James Carafano: “Right. Let’s just start with Ukraine and Russia and then go from there because they’re all linked. So, Putin has a kleptocracy which requires iron control and so this isn’t about being an emperor or being another Stalin. This is about how he can solidify his control forever and so it’s not just about Ukraine; it’s reabsorbing the post-Soviet states, then it’s about having dictatorial control over central Europe, and ultimately about pushing the United States out, isolating the United States, and seeing NATO dissolve. And the biggest cheerleader for this -- we can never forget -- is China. This is exactly what China wants. China wants a weakened and divided Europe that isolates the United States because the one thing that China and Russia and Iran all have in common is it’s a zero-sum game for them. Every expansion of their power requires a diminishment of ours and this will, eventually, directly come back to our homeland, our people, our paychecks, our lives, our safety, our security.

“So, when we have these discussions, it’s not just about what do we do to deal with Putin? And we can talk about that, but if we don’t talk about all three of these countries -- and maybe North Korea -- in the same breath, we’re missing the big picture. Think about it. Maybe not one of those countries is on the scale of the Soviet Union, but if you take the combined military power and strategic threats of Iran, China, and Russia, and you add in the economic power that China brings to the table, that’s actually a bigger threat than the Soviet Union was to the West.

Levin: “And I think you’re right, particularly given the disassembling of our own society here with these different movements, with the Democrat Party that has moved hard-left, with the failure to build up the United States military, as Reagan would say, ‘Peace through strength,’ and I think Trump would say exactly the same thing. And you make a very, very important point, I think -- we have individuals who try to segregate China from Russia -- they say ‘China’s our greatest threat’ -- well, China is our greatest threat, but they’re even a greater threat, as you say, when they have this axis, with – that’s a-x-i-s, axis with -- Russia and Iran. And I don’t think it’s any coincidence that they’re working together, that if one has oil cut off, the other provides oil, if one has resources cut off, the other provides resources, that when our president is so foolish as to call Communist China and give him intel and [President] Xi [Jinping] gives that intel to Putin, I don’t know what other evidence is necessary. Now Putin and Xi have met or talked scores of times over the last 12 months, have they not?”

Carafano: “They have and let me just give you one example of how this all links together. Biden is working with the Russians to secure an Iran deal and even the [Biden] Administration has said that an Iran deal has no capacity whatsoever to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, but what’s more important for us is, right now, immediately, is that deal will give Russia a backdoor into the global economy. So it will, as soon as they sign that deal, it will completely undercut every sanction that the West has put on Putin because he’ll have another venue to reach out and launder money – Iran will launder money for Russia; we’ll be right back where we started.”
