(CNSNews.com)- Speaking on Fox News’ “America’s News Headquarters” on Saturday, Washington State Governor Jay Inslee and 2020 Democratic Presidential Contender said “farmers are getting killed by the Donald Trump administration."
“Farmers are getting killed by the Donald Trump administration, in that they’re being flooded, we’ve had over a billion dollars of damage because of the floods,” Inslee said. “The science is clear that floods will get much worse because of climate change. The aridity of our soil is becoming worse. Trump is now trying to suppress science that we paid for in the Department of Agriculture, which is showing that productivity of our crops will decrease.”
Host Kristin Fisher asked Inslee how Iowa voters are responding to his support of most of the principles of Democrats’ Green New Deal proposal:
“Let’s talk about your central campaign pitch. You have made climate change the centerpiece of your campaign. I know you have not fully endorsed the Green New Deal, but you do welcome most of its principles. So, I'm curious: how that is playing with a lot of the Iowa voters that you're meeting this weekend in a state where there are a lot of farmers, a lot of ethanol producers?
How is your message playing with those very important early voters?”
“Really well,” Inslee responded, adding that “Farmers are getting killed” by climate change under President Trump’s administration:
“We've had a boost of enthusiasm and supporters recently because I’ve had the strongest action against climate change. Farmers are getting killed by the Donald Trump administration, in that they’re being flooded, we’ve had over a billion dollars of damage because of the floods. The science is clear that floods will get much worse because of climate change. The aridity of our soil is becoming worse. Trump is now trying to suppress science that we paid for in the Department of Agriculture which is showing that productivity of our crops will decrease.
“We need a plan to help farmers and I have a plan to make sure they are participants in the new economy. They can actually get a revenue stream to put CO2 out of the atmosphere and get it into the topsoil. So, I am doing very well here because of that message.”
Fisher then asked about agricultural industry concerns that the Green New Deal would devastate rural America:
“If I could interrupt you right there because I want to pop up something from the Quad County Corn Processors CEO, that’s a county in Iowa, he says the Green New Deal would be devastating to rural America, would have a negative impact on the entire agricultural supply chain, from farmers, to cattle owners to drivers, to ethanol refineries. What are you going to do to help those people, if your policies that you support, if they go in place?”
Inslee responded by claiming that Pres. Trump is already “crucifying our agricultural industry”:
“Well, Ethanol refiners, Trump just cratered the ethanol industry by essentially reducing the federal mandate that we have ethanol. Don't talk to me about taking care of farmers, Donald Trump is crucifying our agricultural industry. We have lost markets all over the world in my state. We can't sell our cherries to China, We can't move our soy beans.
“Grain was littering the Midwest last - a few months ago - because of the floods and he won't do a damn thing about it. Look, I think that Tucker Carlson ought to have a permanent vacation; he's lying to the American people, just like Donald Trump. Climate change is killing us in this country and we need somebody to protect Americans. I intend to do that if I’m President of the United States.”
