Even though President Donald Trump has repeatedly condemned Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into potential “collusion” with Russia, calling the probe an illegal and “disgusting Witch Hunt, led by 17 Angry Democrats,” CNN’s Abby Phillip asked him if he’d like to see the investigation be scaled back.
Trump, having repeatedly denounced the investigation and its ever-broadening scrutiny of his personal and professional life, declared the CNN reporter’s question “Stupid”:
CNN’s Phillip: “Do you expect [new Acting Attorney General] Matthew Whitaker to be involved in the Russia probe? Do you want him to?”
Pres. Trump: “That’s up to him.”
CNN’s Phillip: “Do you want him to reign in Robert Mueller?”
Pres. Trump: “What a stupid question that is. What a stupid question.”
Trump then suggested he shouldn’t have been surprised by the CNN reporter’s question, saying he’s seen her ask “a lot of stupid questions”:
“But, I watch you a lot. You ask a lot of stupid questions.”
Trump’s patience with CNN had already been breached by the network’s White House Correspondent, Jim Acosta, who repeatedly badgered the president – and refused to give up the microphone to a young, female White House intern – at a White House press event earlier this week.
An angry Trump rebuked Acosta for his rudeness and belligerence at the time, and the White House later suspended Acosta’s hard pass press credentials.
