White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre claimed Monday that House Republicans are trying to force Americans to pay higher gas prices, but the GOP bills are actually aimed to stop President Joe Biden from further depleting the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) and increase gas supply.
Jean-Pierre read the claim off of her notes at the start of Monday’s press conference:
"House Republicans are using their narrow majority to force the American people to pay higher gas prices, just as big oil companies are amassing record profits. What’s even more alarming is that this is not the only attempt by House Republicans’ majority to raise costs on middle class families.”
However, as Bloomberg explains, the House Republicans’ bill seeks to increase the supply of gasoline by increasing oil production, rather than by draining the nation’s reserve:
“House Republicans have teed up a vote this week on legislation that would tie releases of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to increased drilling on federal lands and water. The Democratically controlled Senate isn’t expected to take up the bill.
“The move is an example of how Republicans are using their House majority to shine a light on the Biden administration’s historic 180-million-barrel drawdown from the reserve.”
