Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz did something Thursday that he says he’s never done before.

Never before has he publicly voiced his agreement with Democrat Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Cruz tweeted Thursday. Apparently, both the Republican and Democrat are against keeping kids out of schools in the name of COVID:

“Here’s something I’ve never said before: I agree with Lori Lightfoot! Shutting down schools is TERRIBLE for our kids.”

In his tweet, Cruz links to an article in National Review, in which Mayor Lightfoot vows that she will not allow the Chicago Teachers’ Union “to take our children hostage” by refusing to come in to work and teach:

“’I will not allow [the union] to take our children hostage,’ Lightfoot said at a press conference. “I will not allow them to compromise the future of this generation of CPS students. That is not going to happen.”

“Lightfoot also revealed that the city had filed an unfair labor practices complaint against the union over its Tuesday decision to switch to remote learning at all Chicago Public Schools facilities, which serve over 340,000 students. Earlier on Wednesday, CTU claimed on Twitter that Lightfoot had locked teachers out of remote learning platforms.”

The mayor also said that Chicago will not require parents to obtain COVID tests for their children. “We are not going to rob parents of their right and their obligation to tell us if they want testing or not on their children. It’s not going to happen. It’s morally wrong,” Lightfoot said.

“Vaccine passports are wrong and no one should be forced to disclose their vaccination status,” Sen. Cruz said in a subsequent tweet on Thursday.

In a Wednesday tweet, Sen. Cruz derided a post by American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten claiming that “No one wants schools closed.” Cruz called Weingarten’s claim “totally bogus” and linked to a New York Post article reporting on AFT’s influence on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC):

“As thousands of schools across the country are closed again, it’s totally bogus that Randi Weingarten says, “No one wants schools closed.” She aggressively lobbied the Biden admin to keep schools closed!”
