House Minority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA)

Responding to the news that House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has asked President Donald Trump to postpone his scheduled State of the Union address to Congress, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) proposed three things Democrats might not want Trump to be able to tell Americans.

On Twitter, House Republican Whip Scalise linked to, and commented on, an article reporting the news of Pelosi’s call to “shut down” the State of the Union (SOTU) – and asked, “What are Democrats afraid of Americans hearing?”

#ShutdownNancy shut down the government, and now #SOTU. What are Democrats afraid of Americans hearing?”

Scalise then asked if these three statistics Democrats want to keep Americans from learning::

  • “That 17,000+ criminals were caught last year at the border?
  • “90% of heroin in the US comes across the southern border?”
  • “Illegal border crossings dropped 90%+ in areas w/ a wall?”

In an open letter to Pres. Trump earlier in the day, Pelosi asked to reschedule his Jan. 29, 2019 State of the Union until the partial government shutdown caused by the battle over funding for a southern border wall was resolved. Pelosi also said Trump could submit his State of the Union message to Congress, in lieu of giving a speech.
