“We hope he learned his lesson,” House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said in a joint statement Sunday, reacting to President Donald Trump’s request for border wall funding in his new budget proposal.
Trump “was forced to admit defeat” in his previous attempt to secure border wall funding from Congress – and he’ll be forced to do so again, if he doesn’t “learn his lesson” – Pelosi and Schumer promise in their statement:
“President Trump hurt millions of Americans and caused widespread chaos when he recklessly shut down the government to try to get his expensive and ineffective wall, which he promised would be paid for by Mexico. Congress refused to fund his wall and he was forced to admit defeat and reopen the government. The same thing will repeat itself if he tries this again. We hope he learned his lesson.”
The two Democrat leaders say their statement was prompted by “reports that President Trump will request $8.6 billion for his expensive and ineffective border wall.”
