A driver fleeing the U.S. into Mexico at a Nogales, Arizona port was shot by a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officer on Thursday after the driver tried to run over the officer, CBP reported on Friday.

Nogales, Arizona Mayor Arturo Garino provided an account of the event to The Arizona Daily Star:

“A vehicle headed south at the port was asked by an officer to stop, but the driver refused and made an attempt to run over the officer.

“The driver was shot, but the vehicle's momentum carried it over the border onto the Mexican side of the border buffer zone between the two countries.”

The wounded driver was then, reportedly, removed from his vehicle by Mexican border authorities and taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
