Responding to Democrats’ threats of what they’ll do if they retake the Senate in November’s election, conservative commentator and Constitutional scholar Mark Levin issued a “note” to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Tuesday.
Levin took to Twitter to publicly warn Schumer of Republicans’ response if a Democrat-controlled Senate makes good on Democrats’ plans to eliminate the filibuster, grant statehood to Democrat-dominated D.C. and Puerto Rico, and pack the Supreme Court with additional justices (provided Schumer’s party takes the White House):
1. NOTE TO CHUCK SCHUMER: IF YOU SHOULD WIN THE SENATE MAJORITY AND ADD SEATS TO THE SUPREME COURT, THEN WE SHALL ADD FURTHER SEATS WHEN WE RETURN TO THE MAJORITY AND PACK THEM WITH CONSTITUTIONALISTS.
2. IF YOU ELIMINATE THE FILIBUSTER RULE AS IT APPLIES TO LEGISLATION, THEN WE SHALL USE IT TO IMPOSE OUR WILL LEGISLATIVELY AND REVERSE YOUR LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS WHEREVER POSSIBLE WHEN WE RETURN TO THE MAJORITY.
3. IF YOU ADD DEMOCRAT SEATS BY ADDING DC AND PUERTO RICO TO THE SENATE, WE SHALL ADD AMERICAN SAMOA AND BREAKUP POTENTIAL OTHER STATES (LIKE TEXAS AND PERHAPS FLORIDA) AND CREATE ADDITIONAL REPUBLICAN SENATE SEATS.
The tactic used to change Senate rules to prevent a minority party filibuster, the so-called “Reid Rule” (aka, the “nuclear option”), was actually instituted by Democrats. Democrat President Franklin Delano Roosevelt tried, unsuccessfully, to pack the Supreme Court in the 1930’s. Likewise, Democrats have long sought statehood for the District of Columbia, in order to gain additional House and Senate seats.
