The Catholic Church is a “cult,” Stephen Colbert declared on his late-night television show Wednesday.
Interviewing actress Rose McGowan, Colbert went out of his way to set up his insult of the Catholic faith:
Colbert: "Well, if I'm not mistaken you grew up in a cult. Fact: you grew in a cult."
McGowan: "So he thought that was a better alternative to the crap (bleep)-hole world we're living in. He might have been right. It just went wrong for a little bit."
Colbert: "I was also raised in the cult called the Catholic Church."
McGowan then agreed with Colbert’s characterization of Catholicism as a “cult”:
McGowan: "Right, it's the same. It’s the same.”
