Monday, as the Senate confirmation hearing regarding Catholic Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barret unfolded, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) declared that she’s “sick and tired of Republicans who co-opt their faith to advance bigotry and barbarism.”

What’s more, many in Congress would actually throw Jesus Christ out of the House chamber, if they had the chance, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted:

“Sick and tired of Republicans who co-opt faith as an excuse to advance bigotry and barbarism.

“Fact is, if today Christ himself came to the floor of Congress and repeated his teachings, many would malign him as a radical and eject him from the chamber.”

“The only time religious freedom is invoked is in the name of bigotry and discrimination,” Ocasio-Cortez says in a video she included with her tweet.

In the video of comments she made during a House hearing on February 28, 2020 regarding the perceived threats to LGBTQ and transgender rights, Ocasio-Cortez likened espousing belief in sexual morality and biological sex to the support of slavery and racism:

“It’s very difficult to sit here and listen to arguments in the long history in this country of using Scripture, and weaponizing and using Scripture to justify bigotry.

“White supremacists have done, those who justified slavery did it, those who fought against integration did it.

“And I am tired of communities of being of faith being weaponized and being mischaracterized. Because the only time religious freedom is invoked is in the name of bigotry and discrimination. I'm tired of it.”
