House Speaker Nancy Pelosi congratulated Anderson Cooper yesterday on CNN for the arrival of his new baby, which he had through a surrogate and who will be co-parented by his former boyfriend.
“Well, first let me say how happy I am about your new baby, how lovely,” Pelosi said at the start of the interview.
“Wyatt, how perfectly named,” she told Cooper of his baby. “We all know why that is and congratulations. And as you now are a father, you see how important it is to keep the world safe, for the children, for the children.”
The Daily Mail published a report on May 5 explaining Cooper’s parenting arrangement. The Mail said:
“Anderson Cooper says his ex Benjamin Maisani will co-parent his newborn son Wyatt.
“The journalist explained why he and Maisani are raising their son together during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Monday night.
“'He's my family and I want him to be Wyatt's family as well,' said the first time dad, 52.
“Cooper also revealed that Maisani was in the delivery room with him when the surrogate carrying Wyatt gave birth.”
Here is a transcript of the part of Cooper’s interview with Nancy Pelosi where she congratulates him on his new baby:
Anderson Cooper: “I spoke to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. We started with the President's comments with the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine. Madam Speaker, what is your reaction to the President saying that he is now taking hydroxychloroquine? Are you concerned?"
Speaker Pelosi: ‘Well, first let me say how happy I am about your new baby, how lovely."
Anderson Cooper: “Thank you."
Speaker Pelosi: “Wyatt, how perfectly named. We all know why that is and congratulations. And as you now are a father, you see how important it is to keep the world safe, for the children, for the children.”
