America reached new heights in 1969. President Kennedy’s vision of landing on the moon was fulfilled when commander Neil Armstrong took “one giant leap for mankind” and explored the lunar surface with fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Back on earth that year, the United States had 543,000 service members in Vietnam, the greatest number of troops deployed since the war began. Tragically, too many never “returned safely” as was Kennedy’s goal for the crew of Apollo 11.

It’s time to end the practice of having a formal response to the President’s State of the Union address. It’s pointless, petty and uninspired. It matters not whether the respondent is Stacy Abrams or Marco Rubio, the evening belongs to the president. It is his time to inform the Congress and the public about the challenges we face, offer solutions, and inspire Americans toward a common purpose. When the rival party – without consideration of, or reflection on – what the President said, offers an immediate voice of opposition, that only perpetuates distrust and discord in our political life.

As professional football heads into Week 2, the National Football League continues to lead from behind on its most contentious issue – how athletes will conduct themselves during pre-game ceremonies honoring our country. I’m not with President Trump in Europe this week, but I don’t need to be – he’s doing just fine and representing my interests well. It seems that Donald Trump reserves a seat on Air Force One for the Forgotten American when he travels overseas.

Protests against our national anthem reached new lows last week when an unidentified man “took a knee” on the White House lawn as the national anthem was performed. He was attending a patriotic celebration originally meant to honor the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

High expectations accompany President Trump’s meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore. The hope is that the historic meeting between the two leaders will result in a nuclear-free North Korea. If the date of the summit is any indication, hope abounds. It was June 12, 1987, that President Ronald Reagan, speaking at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, ignited a spark that not long thereafter led to the deconstruction of the Berlin Wall and later to the fall of the Soviet Empire.

President Donald Trump doesn’t like to see Americans in foreign prisons. On this matter, the International Criminal Court is going to test his patience.

I urge you to exercise your authority as Commander-in-Chief of America’s Armed Forces to prohibit uniformed military from appearing in any official capacity at National Football League games until the NFL apologizes for its abuse of America’s military, veterans, and first responders and enacts a policy requiring players and League personnel to refrain from personal or political protests during pre-game ceremonies.

It's time to put an end to these anti-American demonstrations during NFL games.
