Hedberg and his ex-wife, who were Virginia residents at the time, separated when their son was four years old. When Hedberg left Detthow for another man, a Virginia court gave him custody of their child, granted liberal visitation to his ex-wife and ordered that Hedberg no longer live with his same-sex partner.
