4 of 6 Richest U.S. Counties Are D.C. Suburbs

(CNSNews.com) - Four of the six richest counties in the United States in 2021—when measured by median household income--were located in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., according to newly released data from the Census Bureau’s Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates.

Loudoun County, Va., with a median household income of $153,716, ranked as the nation’s richest county in 2021.

Falls Church City, Va., which the Census Bureau counts as a county because it is an independent city, ranked second with a median household income of $142,430.

 
 
 

Santa Clara County, Calif., which is at the heart of Silicon Valley, ranked third with a median household income of $141,161.

Los Alamos County, New Mexico, which is home to the federal government’s Los Alamos National Laboratory, ranked fourth with a median household income of $134,050.

Fairfax County, Va., ranked fifth with a median household income of $133,845.

Howard County, Md., ranked sixth with a median household income of $ 131,412.

The top ten richest counties in the nation also included San Mateo County, Calif., which ranked seventh with a median household income of $131,151; Douglas County, Colo., which ranked eighth with a median household income of$129,839; Nassau County, N.Y., which ranked ninth with a median household income of $125,118; and Arlington County, Va., which ranked tenth with a median household income of $124, 474.

With Arlington County coming in as the tenth richest county, the D.C. suburbs had 5 of the 10 richest counties in the country.

By contrast, Buffalo County, S.D, was the poorest county in the country in 2021—with a median household income of $25,653.

The poorest ten counties were rounded out by Holmes County, Miss. ($28,236); McDowell County, W.V. ($28,720); Issaquena County, Miss. ($29,050); Lee County, Ky. ($29,143); Lake County, Tenn. ($29,387); Owsley County, Ky. ($29,365); Martin County, Ky. ($29,387); Sumter County, Ala. ($29,490); and Lee County, Ark. ($29,714).
