(CNS News) – With elections coming on Nov. 8, President Joe Biden announced this week he would veto any forthcoming bill that places a national ban on abortion in the United States, and encouraged Congress to take action and codify Roe v. Wade into federal law.
“If Republicans get their way with the national ban, it won’t matter where you live in America,” Biden said at the Democratic National Committee on Oct. 18. “So let me be very clear: If such a bill were to pass in the next several years, I’ll veto it. But we can’t let it pass in the first instance.”
Biden later stated, “And folks, if we do that [elect more Democrats], here is the promise I make to you and the American people: The first bill that I will send to the Congress will be to codify Roe v. Wade. And when Congress passes it, I’ll sign it in January, 50 years after Roe was first decided the law of the land.”
“And, together, we’ll restore the right to choose for every woman in every state in America. So, vote. You got to get out the vote. We can do this if we vote,” he said.
Despite Biden’s remarks to remind pro-choice people of the need to vote Democrat in November, polls show most Americans favor restrictions on abortions. According to a Gallup survey, 63% of Americans believe abortion should be illegal or only legal under certain circumstances. Meanwhile, a Fox News poll found that out of 1,003 randomly selected registered voters in April 2022, 54% of them opposed abortion after 15 weeks.
Notable pro-life activists criticized Biden’s speech and his persistence to counteract the effects of Roe v. Wade being overturned.
“Catholics are appalled by the unprecedented abortion extremism pursued by the nation’s second Catholic president,” said Brian Burch, president of CatholicVote. “While Americans struggle with record inflation, the president of the United States has nothing to offer but a pledge to expand the right to violently destroy innocent unborn children – up until birth and for any reason.”
“We need Church leaders to step up and make clear that no Catholic can support candidates or policies that would make America one of the most extreme abortion nations in the world,” said Burch.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, reacted in a statement, “The stakes of the midterm elections could not be higher. President Biden is making clear today that if Democrats control Congress in 2023, they will destroy the filibuster and pass their Abortion on Demand Until Birth Act to mandate abortion on demand in all 50 states. We encourage pro-life Republicans to keep going on offense to expose this extremist position.”
President of March for Life, Jeanne Mancini, said to LifeNews, “President Biden’s desperate attempt to sway voters by pushing painful abortions is clear evidence of how out of touch he is. Ninety percent of Americans reject Biden’s view that abortion should be legal up until birth for any reason – paid for by taxpayers. Our country is facing significant challenges and looking for positive solutions, not more violence and death. It is time for Americans to hold pro-abortion politicians accountable.”
