(CNS News) -- When asked about her colleagues who support requiring an ID to purchase alcohol, but refuse to answer whether an ID should be required to vote, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) said, “Our right to vote is so important that we should have a voter ID.”

On Wednesday at the U.S. Capitol, CNS News asked Ernst, “Some of your colleagues across the aisle have told me that they support having an ID for alcohol but not an ID for voting. What do you have to say to that?”

“I think our right to vote is so important that we should have a voter ID. We have to protect the integrity of elections. People need to prove who they say they are,” she responded.

Ernst spoke at a press conference with other Senate Republican leaders Tuesday afternoon. They repeated their support for photo identification at the polls and claimed that S.1, the For the People Act, was never designed to pass but was simply for show.

At the conference, Sen. John Thune (D-N.D.) said, “This bill was never a serious attempt to make law.”

“This is a show vote, this is a check the box exercise,” he added.

S.1, the For the People Act, was initially passed as H.R 1 on March 3 in the House of Representatives. The legislation would have given the federal government sweeping powers over elections and prohibited states from requiring an ID to vote.

Senate Republicans successfully filibustered the bill on Tuesday, preventing it from moving forward in the Senate.
