(CNS News) -- On June 2,  GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel sent a tweet wishing everyone a “Happy #PrideMonth!” The tweet was criticized by both the political right and the political left.

“Happy #PrideMonth,” she wrote. “@GOP is proud to have doubled our LGBTQ support over the last 4 years, and we will continue to grow our big tent by supporting measures that promote fairness and balance protections for LGBTQ Americans and those with deeply held religious beliefs.”

In the tweet, McDaniel expressed her desire to expand the “big tent” of the Republican Party.

President of the Family Research Council, Tony Perkins, quote-tweeted McDaniel and added, “Sounds good in a tweet, but the reality is religious freedom is being endangered by those demanding forced acceptance of the LGBTQ agenda from the elementary classroom to the corporate board room and everything in between. There can be no compromise on our First Freedom.”

Perkins pointed out that religious institutions and business owners are being targeted in the name of acceptance. He is likely referencing LGBTQ+ sex education being incorporated into schools and promoted on television, and legislation that would force individuals to violate their religious beliefs, such as The Equality Act, being pushed by Democrats.

Some were quick to claim that the GOP wants to take rights away from LGBTQ+ individuals, with one person responding, “8 of your governors have signed into law that trans girls and women cannot play high school & college sports on girls'/women's teams.

"One did it on the VERY FIRST DAY of Pride Month. Miss us with your hypocrisy. Religion shouldn't trump another person's right to be who they are.”

The Log Cabin Republicans, the nation’s largest organization of LGBT Republicans, accepted and applauded the tweet by McDaniel.

“Proud to be a partner with you, the @gop and to support small government, individual responsibility,  personal freedom and a strong national defense! #InclusionWins,” they added in a quote-tweet.
