(CNSNews.com) - Former Vice President Joe Biden today admonished President Donald Trump for holding up a Bible as he stood in front of St. John’s Church in Washington, D.C. on Monday.

“The president held up the Bible at St. John’s Church yesterday,” Biden said in a speech delivered in Philadelphia.

“I just wish he opened it once in a while, instead of brandishing it,” Biden said.

“If he opened it, he could have learned something,” he said.

“We’re all called to love one another as we love ourselves. That’s really hard work. But it’s the work of America,” Biden said.

“Donald Trump isn’t interested in doing that work,” Biden continued.

“Instead, he is preening and sweeping away all the guard rails that have long protected our democracy,” Biden said. “Guard rails that help make possible this nation’s path to a more perfect union—a union that constantly requires reform and rededication, and, yes, protest from voices that are mistreated, ignored, left out or left behind.”

Here is the transcript of the part of Joe Biden’s speech where he criticizes President Trump’s use of the Bible:

Joe Biden: “The president held up the Bible at St. John’s Church yesterday. I just wish he opened it once in a while, instead of brandishing it. If he opened it, he could have learned something. We’re all called to love one another as we love ourselves. That’s really hard work. But it’s the work of America. Donald Trump isn’t interested in doing that work. Instead, he is preening and sweeping away all the guard rails that have long protected our democracy. Guard rails that help make possible this nation’s path to a more perfect union—a union that constantly requires reform and rededication, and, yes, protest from voices that are mistreated, ignored, left out or left behind.”
