(CNSNews.com) - While Republican Glenn Youngkin made parental involvement in education the centerpiece of his campaign, Democrat Terry McAuliffe focused mostly on Donald Trump, mentioning the former president dozens of times in many of his speeches as he tried to tie Youngkin to Trump.

Even President Joe Biden mentioned Trump when he recently campaigned for McAuliffe: "I ran against Donald Trump. Terry is running against an acolyte of Donald Trump," Biden said.

McAuliffe hoped that Trump hatred would motivate his base to vote for him. Apparently, it didn't work, as Trump himself noted in a press release on Tuesday:

It is looking like Terry McAuliffe's campaign against a certain person named “Trump” has very much helped Glenn Youngkin. All McAuliffe did was talk Trump, Trump, Trump and he lost! What does that tell you, Fake News? I guess people running for office as Democrats won’t be doing that too much longer. I didn’t even have to go rally for Youngkin, because McAuliffe did it for me. Thank you to the MAGA voters for turning out big!

On Saturday, McAuliffe said the Virginia governor's race is "not about Trump." McAuliffe said he'd "love" to have Trump come to Virginia to campaign for Youngkin: "But you know...this is not about Trump," he added -- leaving some voters to wonder, what was it about?
