(CNSNews.com) - President Biden is among the Democrats warning that dire consequences will flow from a Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, if such a ruling is issued later this year, as a leaked document suggests.
A number of Democrats have asked what else conservatives will attack -- the right to birth control? Same-sex marriage? Even biracial marriages?
But on Wednesday, Biden raised a new prospect:
"This is about a lot more than abortion," the president said after delivering remarks on the economy.
"What happens if you have states change the law, saying that children who are LGBTQ can't be in classrooms with other children? Is that legit under the way that the decision is written?
“What are the next things that are going to be attacked? Because this MAGA crowd is really the most extreme political organization that's existed in American history, in recent American history."
The draft majority opinion leaked to Politico specifically addresses the concerns raised by politically motivated Democrats.
As Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the majority draft opinion:
The abortion right is also critically different from any other right that this Court has held to fall within the Fourteenth Amendment’s protection of “liberty.” Roe’s defenders characterize the abortion right as similar to the rights recognized in past decisions involving matters such as intimate sexual relations, contraception, and marriage, but abortion is fundamentally different, as both Roe and Casey acknowledged, because it destroys what those decisions call “fetal life” and what the law now before us describes as an “un-born human being."
Abortion, unlike birth control, marriage or even segregating LGBTQ children, involves a third party -- the unborn baby.
