( - In May, 132,887 people were apprehended between ports of entry on the Southwest Border, a 33.81-percent increase from the 99,304 apprehended in April 2019; and a 43.13 percent increase from the 92,840 apprehended in March.

So far in Fiscal Year 2019 (October 2018 through May 2019), 593,507 people have been apprehended at the Southwest Border, far exceeding the total of 396,579 for all of FY 2018. And they keep coming -- in ever greater numbers.

"We've been sounding the alarm for a very long time that this is absolutely a humanitarian and national security crisis," Mark Morgan, the frustrated acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, told Fox News's Laura Ingraham Wednesday night. "And Congress has failed to do their job."

President Trump on Wednesday blamed both Mexico and congressional Democrats for the crisis, while Democrat Joe Biden blamed President Trump and his administration for keeping the "hordes" (Biden's word) coming.

Morgan wasn't having it:

Laura, that is absolutely -- and look, I'm trying to choose my words carefully here, but that is absolutely absurd.

The crisis is being created by our broken asylum laws that tells people you grab a kid, and that's a U.S. passport into this country. And once you get here, you are going to stay.

Laura, right now, we have people that are renting kids. They're renting kids, coming across. Then the facilitators on the American side are then sending the kids back to be recycled to be rented again to form fake families so they can come into the United States.

Morgan also took exception to calls from some lawmakers, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), to abolish ICE:

"So politicians like that, Laura, that are absolutely misinformed," Morgan said. "If you talk about abolishing ICE, it is absolutely irresponsible. Let's talk about the homeland security side, investigations side of ICE. Last year alone, 34,000 criminal arrests, 5,000 gang members arrested. Thousands of cases of child smuggling, exploitation, human trafficking -- they seized $1.2 billion in U.S. currency from illicit activity.

"Yeah, I'd like to talk to that young congresswoman and have her tell me what's going to happen if ICE is abolished."

Morgan noted that 66,000 individuals have been removed from the U.S. this year to date, and 90 percent were either convicted of additional crimes, other than illegal entry, or had charges pending

"So what I would say to politicians like that, you need to get informed and stop the rhetoric out there because it's not doing anybody any good."

Morgan called it "unbelievable" that ICE and CBP are still begging Congress for a legislative fix as well as for more money to provide more beds for tens of thousands of illegal immigrants, many of them now claiming asylum as a way to stay here.

Lawmakers "know what they need to do, we've been telling them," Morgan said. "And they refuse to do what they need to do."

He noted that Border Patrol is staggering under the burden of sheltering 19,000 people with a capacity of just 4,000 beds. "They have 2,500 kids in the facilities. It's unsafe. They shouldn't be there. We're asking for a supplemental to help HHS, to help CBP and ICE to get additional bed space to alleviate the humanitarian side of this, and Congress -- still sitting on their hands," Morgan said.
