(CNS News) -- Evangelical leader Franklin Graham denounced the Evangelical Lutheran Church's decision to appoint a transgender male (biological female) to be a bishop, stating that it is "rebellion against God" and "it is sin."
Rev. Megan Rohrer was installed by the Evangelical Lutheran Church on Sept. 11, and will head its Sierra Pacific Synod, overseeing about 180 congregations in Northern California.
Rohrer, 41, is a biological female, and reportedly identifies as neither a male nor a female; she uses the pronouns "they" and "them" to describe herself.
In a Sept. 17 post on Facebook, Rev. Graham wrote, "I’m not a Lutheran, but it grieves me to see any church taking steps that are against the teachings of the Word of God."
"The Evangelical Lutheran Church installed their first transgender bishop in San Francisco this week," said Graham. "The media say that this bishop is a biological female, has a wife and children, and wants to be referred to using the pronouns they or he. The bishop was one of seven LGBTQ pastors accepted by the progressive Evangelical Lutheran Church in 2010 after it first allowed ordination of pastors in same-sex relationships."
"I would say there are many Lutherans who are greatly disappointed in this direction," wrote Graham. "This is rebellion against God and His Word and His standards -- it is sin."
"God created us and loves us and defines what sin is, not us," said the reverend. "The Bible says, 'He created them male and female...'" (Genesis 5:2).
Franklin Graham is the son of the late-Pastor Billy Graham. In addition to preaching in the United States and abroad, Franklin Graham oversees the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and the humanitarian aid group Samaritan's Purse.
