Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, reportedly the richest man in the world, said that he used to vote Democrat but will now vote Republican because the Democrats "have become the party of division & hate."

Musk, 50, is in the process of finalizing a deal to purchase the social media platform Twitter and turning it into a digital public square, without the leftist bias the company has employed for years. Musk says he wants to allow nearly all points of view on the platform and eliminate permanent bans, such as that imposed on former President Donald Trump.

In a May 18 tweet, Musk wrote, "In the past I voted Democrat, because they were (mostly) the kindness party."

"But they have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican," he added.  "Now, watch their dirty tricks campaign against me unfold …"

In a subsequent tweet on May 19, he wrote, "The attacks against me should be viewed through a political lens -- this is their standard (despicable) playbook -- but nothing will deter me from fighting for a good future and your right to free speech."

Musk is worth an estimated $209 billion. In addition to heading Tesla and SpaceX, Musk is the founder of The Boring Company and X.com (now part of PayPal). He is also president of the Musk Foundation. Elon Musk has eight children.

Musk's children are homeschooled. In an interview on YouTube, he said, “Regular schools, they were not doing the things that I thought should be done. So I thought, well, creating a school [homeschooling] would be better. I hired a teacher from the institute my kids were previously at, who also agrees that there’s a better way to do it [educate].”
