( - Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee told Fox News’ “Outnumbered” that the United States should deduct what China owes it for the damage done by the coronavirus from what the U.S. owes China.

“One thing, you just say, ‘You know all that money that we supposedly owe you? We don't owe it anymore. We're just going to deduct that from what you have done to us. What you've done to her employment, what you’ve done to our people, what you’ve done to our economy,’” he said.

Huckabee said that the pandemic should lead the United States to not be so dependent on China for manufacturing.

“And let's hope the big lesson that comes out of this, now that China has been caught with their pants down, I hope that we don't ever go back to the point where we are so dependent upon them in manufacturing the things we need. We ought to be able to feed ourselves, not import our food, protect our farmers,” he said.

“We’ve got to fuel ourselves, not import our energy, and we've got to fight for ourselves. By that I mean we've got to manufacture our own weapons of protection, including weapons like our pharmaceuticals. Don't farm that out, because when you do you are beholden to whoever is making that stuff for you in order to survive. America should never be in that position again,” Huckabee said.

“If you owe somebody something and they owe you, and at some point you're not going to pay, well, you just deduct what they owe you from what you owe them. That's the way it can work,” he said.

Huckabee also panned Democratic proposals to provide a guaranteed monthly income to Americans during the pandemic, saying it would cause more damage to the economy than the coronavirus itself.

“You know, Harris, when I hear the term ‘guaranteed income,’ I'm thinking, ‘Wait a minute, it's one thing to help someone through a crisis. Guaranteed income seems like we are going to be wards and serfs the state.’ I'm not a statist. I believe in personal individual liberty and responsibility,” Huckabee said.

“If we start saying, ‘You're going to get a paycheck, guaranteed, no matter whether you go to work or not,’ that will destroy our economy worse than the pandemic -- long-term, and short-term,” he said.
