(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont tweeted out a video on Wednesday in which he explained his view that recently enacted state laws imposing restrictions on abortion are “blatantly unconstitutional” and that banning abortion will “kill women.”
“It is not a stretch to say that banning abortion will, quite literally, kill women,” Sanders says in the video.
Here is transcript of the statement Sanders makes in the video he tweeted out:
“It is unacceptable that a small group of extremists are trying to control the lives and health of women across this country by moving to overturn Roe v. Wade.
"There is a well-funded and extreme attack on the right of women to control their own bodies and their own futures. In fact, nearly 30 bans on abortion have been introduced, passed or signed into law in states all across this country. And that is what we call a war against women. The truth is, laws like these are dangerous, regressive, and blatantly unconstitutional.
"And here’s what really gets me as a U.S. senator: Every day I listen to my Republican colleagues tell us how they believe in small government, how they want to get the government off the backs of the American people. Well, I guess that’s true except if you’re a woman who wants to control her own body. In my view, it is not a coincidence that at the same time many states are passing these laws, we see President Trump and Republicans in Congress rushing through extreme, anti-choice federal judges, including to the Supreme Court.
"We must fight with everything we’ve got, because if they succeed the consequences would be absolutely disastrous and threaten the lives of women all across this country. Here’s how we know: immediately after Roe v. Wade, the mortality rate for abortions decreased significantly. Making abortion legal made is safer. It is not a stretch to say that banning abortion will, quite literally, kill women.
"So what can we do? First, we must support the local organizations that are providing reproductive health care in states where the right to abortion is under attack. Secondly, we must do everything we can to stop the flood of extreme judges Trump is nominating. Third, we must speak out. At a time when the vast majority of the American people oppose overturning Roe v. Wade, we absolutely must stand up to these attacks, and together we must continue fighting until the constitutional rights of all women in this country are secure."
