(CNS News) -- Although some Republicans have said they would welcome Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) into the Republican Party, Rev. Franklin Graham said he hoped Manchin would stay with the Democrats "to be a thorn in their side," because they are "crazy socialists."

On Sunday, Manchin announced that he would not vote for the multi-trillion-dollar Build Back Better legislation being pushed by Democrats and President Joe Biden.

"I cannot explain the sweeping Build Back Better Act in West Virginia and I cannot vote to move forward on this mammoth piece of legislation," said Manchin in a statement.

“My Democratic colleagues in Washington are determined to dramatically reshape our society in a way that leaves our country even more vulnerable to the threats we face," he added. "I cannot take that risk with a staggering debt of more than $29 trillion and inflation taxes that are real and harmful to every hard-working American at the gasoline pumps, grocery stores and utility bills with no end in sight."

On Wednesday, Rev. Graham commented on Facebook, "Republicans are hoping Senator Joe Manchin will switch parties -- from Democrat to Republican. On one hand, I agree with Senator Mitch McConnell that Senator Manchin would be more comfortable on the other side."

"But part of me also hopes he stays right where he is to be a thorn in the side of the crazy socialists who have taken control of the Democratic Party," said Graham. "What do you think?"
