(CNSNews.com) - In the name of “tolerance,” People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wants a proposed Chicago public high school designed for homosexual and lesbian students to offer a vegetarian-only menu.

“The school in Chicago is in a very unique position in aligning its cafeteria with the social justice message that they’re teaching in the classroom,” PETA Director of Media Relations Michael McGraw told CNSNews.com.

McGraw sent a letter to the proposed school asking the expected principal, Chad Weiden, to choose a strict vegetarian – or “vegan” – menu for the cafeteria.

“Animals have pain and emotions just like we do,” McGraw told CNSNews.com.
“They (animals) should not be bullied, abused, and killed just so we can eat their flesh.”

The Chicago Board of Education has not officially approved the school but is expected to consider it Nov. 19. If approved, the school’s curriculum will include lessons in sexual identity and will discuss notable male homosexual and lesbian figures.

Laurie Higgins, director of school advocacy at the conservative Illinois Family Institute (IFI), said PETA’s animal rights agenda trivializes the social issues of tolerance and teen abuse in schools.

IFI opposes Social Justice High – Pride Campus, Higgins said, because taxpayer dollars will go to fund the “controversial and unproven socio-political theories” behind the school’s founding.

Mike Vaughn, a spokesman for Chicago Public Schools, told CNSNews.com that no decision has been made yet on whether the school will offer a vegan menu.
