Largest Powerball in History Would Pay Off Just 0.004% of the National Debt
Powerball officials have announced that the current jackpot has climbed to an estimated $600 million - enough money to pay down a whopping 0.004% of the national debt!
According to the latest available data from the U.S. Treasury, the total public debt outstanding is $16,734,808,644,648.07.
The $600 million jackpot (the largest prize in the game's history) would make any winner, or winners, incredibly wealthy, but would only pay off a fraction of the burgeoning federal debt.
To put the national debt in perspective, if we divide the $16.7 trillion by $600 million, we find that the largest jackpot in Powerball history would pay off just 0.004% of the amount America owes to its creditors.
In other words, a person would have to win the largest Powerball in history 27,891 times to pay off all of the nation's debt.
