Tropical Storm Beatriz heading toward Mexico

MIAMI (AP) — A hurricane warning area has been extended at Tropical Storm Beatriz gains strength off the coast of south-central Mexico.

A hurricane warning is in effect early Monday for the coast of Mexico from Zihuatanejo, northwestward to La Fortunada. A tropical storm warning is in effect for other parts of the Mexican coast.

Beatriz's maximum sustained winds have increased to near 60 mph (95 kph) and the storm is expected to reach hurricane strength later in the day. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Beatriz's center is expected to approach the coast by late Monday or early Tuesday.

As of early Monday, Beatriz is located about 155 miles (245 kilometers) south-southwest of Zihuatanejo and is moving northwest at 10 mph (17 kph).
