Trial opens in adopted Russian boy's death in Pa.
YORK, Pa. (AP) — A trial is under way for a Pennsylvania couple charged with killing their 7-year-old adopted son from Russia, one of several cases that have created friction between Russia and the United States over foreign adoptions.
A lawyer for Michael and Nanette Craver told a York County jury Tuesday that Nathaniel Craver had a history of injuring himself, and the couple had done all they could to help him.
Prosecutors say the Cravers abused and neglected the boy, who officials say died of blunt force trauma in August 2009. The Cravers face charges including criminal homicide and endangerment.
Russia has complained for years about the alleged abuse of Russian adoptees in America. Russia signed a treaty in July giving it more oversight of adopted children after they arrive in the U.S.
