(CNSNews.com) – In a video clip released Wednesday by Al-Arabiya TV, failed Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad talks about the reasons behind his planned attack saying, “Jihad is an obligated duty in Islam on every Muslim.”
“By abandoning jihad -- may Allah protect us from that -- Islam is destroyed, and Muslims fall into inferior position; their honor is lost, their lands are stolen, their rule and authority vanish. Jihad is an obligated duty in Islam on every Muslim,” Shahzad says in the video.
Shahzad parked a SUV equipped with explosives in New York’s Times Square on May 1 of this year. The explosives failed to detonate, and Shahzad was arrested two days later at Kennedy Airport attempting to board a flight to Dubai.
Shahzad explains in the video that jihad is, “holy fighting in Allah cause with full force of numbers and weaponry.”  Shahzad says that jihad is given the “utmost importance in Islam” and is “one of its pillars on which it stands.”
“By jihad Islam is established,” Shahzad said.
Shahzad said in the video that he hopes the hearts of Muslims will be pleased with his attack, and that Muslims will defeat other ideologies and political systems to make Islam supreme.
“(D)emocracy will be defeated, and so was communism defeated, and all the other ‘isms’ and ‘schisms’ will be defeated, and the word of Allah will be supreme,” Shahzad said.

Shahzad also referenced Sura 3, Verse 110, presumably of the Qur’an, which states, “You are the best of the nations raised up for (the benefit of) men; you enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong and believe in Allah; and if the followers of the Book had believed it would have been better for them; of them (some) are believers and most of them are transgressors.”
According to the Dubai-based A-Arabiya TV, the full video is around 40 minutes long, and Al-Arabiya has only released a portion of the video on its YouTube page. The video includes clips from a speech by Shahzad lasting a little over two minutes, and then footage showing Shahzad walking with a group of people through rugged terrain carrying weapons. In his plea before a U.S. District Court last month in New York, Shahzad pled guilty on ten charges related to the failed bombing, saying he intended to injure and kill people. [http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/06l1shap.pdf]
“I want to plead guilty and I'm going to plead guilty a hundred times forward because until the hour the US pulls it forces from Iraq and Afghanistan and stops the drone strikes in Somalia and Yemen and in Pakistan and stops the occupation of Muslim lands and stops killing the Muslims and stops reporting the Muslims to its government, we will be attacking US, and I plead guilty to that,” Shahzad said in court.
“I consider myself a mujahid, a Muslim soldier,” Shahzad told the judge.
Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, president and founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD), rejected Shahzad’s assertion that jihad is a duty of Muslims, telling CNSNews.com that it represents the “supremacism of political Islam” and that it must be purged from the Muslim community.
The Arizona-based AIFD is dedicated to articulating an understanding of Islam which separates religion and state in complete harmony with the U.S. Constitution by standing against “the religious fanatics who exploit the religion of Islam for a nihilistic, anti-American anti-Western war,” according to Jasser.
“While jihad has many meanings, one of its predominant ones for Islamists is armed conflict or war in their warped concept of the defense of Muslims and the ‘Islamic state,’” he said in a written statement provided to CNSNews.com.
Jasser said that the obligations of jihad in the 7th century Arabian Peninsula under the Prophet Muhammad’s leadership are not considered binding by all of the reformist and modern Muslims that he knows. Muslims have a national obligation of citizenship to the United States and, “there is and can be no other competing obligations,” Jasser told CNSNews.com
“If Muslims apply the true meaning of jihad today, they would start a ‘jihad against jihad’ and work to end the concept with regards to armed conflict and nation states and the ummah (Muslim state),” Jasser said. “The real jihad (holy struggle) in 2010 is within the House of Islam against the Islamists and those advocates of political Islam and its radical manifestations that have hijacked the spiritual path of Islam.”

Faisal Shahzad:  “And one of the things which is the most prominent in Islam when I came to it was jihad.  I mean, people do pray, they do—they give zakat (alms tax), they do fast, they go to Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca), but they follow part of it, but they don’t follow the other part of it which is fighting in the cause of Allah.  And jihad, the importance that it has is, I’m just going to explain that to you.  The explanation of a jihad is [begins reading from book] a jihad, holy fighting in Allah cause with full force of numbers and weaponry is given the utmost importance in Islam, and is one of its pillars on which it stands.  By jihad Islam is established.  Allah’s word is made superior.  His word being La ilaha ill-Allah which means, ‘None has the right to worship but Allah.’  And His religion Islam is propagated.  By abandoning jihad, may Allah protect us from that, Islam is destroyed, and Muslims fall into inferior position, their honor is lost, their lands are stolen, their rule and authority vanish.  Jihad is an obligated duty in Islam on every Muslim.”
“Insha’Allah (God willing), eight years has passed by in Afghanistan, and you’ll see that the Muslim war has just started, and we’ll tell you how, how—until the—until Islam is spread throughout the whole world.”
“The other point is, is that this attack on the United States will also be a revenge attack from all, for all the mujahideen (holy warriors) and mujahireen (Muslim emigrants), and the weak and oppressed people of Muslims.  For example, Baitullah Amir Mehsud, as well as the Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and all the Muslim Arab that have been martyred.  I will take revenge on their behalf, Insha’Allah.  And I really wish that hearts of the Muslim will be pleased with this attack, and Insha’Allah.”
“Islam is coming to the world, Insha’Allah. Islam will spread on the whole world. And the democracy will be defeated, and so was communism defeated, and all the other ‘isms’ and ‘schisms’ will be defeated, and the word of Allah will be supreme, Insha’Allah.  And Muslims are gonna’ do that.  (Unintelligible) says in Sura 3, Verse 110…”(End)
