LOS ANGELES (AP) — Legislators in California and states across the country are considering laws to restrict use of tanning beds by teens, citing skin cancer risks and other health problems.

This year, at least 22 states have considered legislation that would put age restrictions on commercial tanning bed use.

The California proposal would bar use of tanning beds by anyone under age 18, even with parental permission. California teens 14 and older currently may use tanning beds with parental permission, but critics say the forms are frequently forged.

Along with California, legislatures in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania are considering banning use of tanning beds by anyone under age 18.

Tanning industry advocates say such bills could mean a 10 percent hit to businesses that are already struggling to stay afloat.
