Reps. Steve King (R-Iowa) and Michelle Bachmann (R-Minn.) recently asked the House leaders not to move another CR that permits the $105.5 billion in automatically appropriated funds for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) spending to go forward.

CNSNews.com asked Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) about the Bachmann-King proposal:  “Will you vote for another CR that permits that 105.5 billion?”

Rep. Smith said: “I am arguing that we need to make significant cuts, including the one you just mentioned. But we also need to include the pro-life riders--including de-funding Planned Parenthood--which Planned Parenthood alone has done five-and-a-half million abortions in their own clinics.”

Smith told CNSNews.com that in 2009, “They (Planned Parenthood) did over 332,000 (abortions). That’s a huge loss of children’s lives. They get large amounts--millions of dollars from the federal government.”

Smith is a co-sponsor of the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act (H.R. 614), sponsored by Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), which was first introduced on Jan. 21, 2009 and re-introduced on January 7, 2011 as H.R.217. The act blocks funding to organizations that perform abortions; it does not reduce the total amount of funds available for family planning.

He has also co-sponsored several pro-life bills in 2011 including the Protect Life Act (H.R. 358), the Life at Conception Act (H.R. 374), and the Abortion Non-Discrimination Act of 2011 (H.R. 361).

Smith did not vote for the last continuing resolution.

Here is a transcript of the exchange with Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.):

Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.): "I am arguing that we need to make significant cuts, including the one you just mentioned. But we also need to include the pro-life riders including de-funding Planned Parenthood, which Planned Parenthood alone has done 5 and a half million abortions in their own clinics. In 2009 they did over 332,000. That’s a huge loss of children’s lives. They get large amounts--millions of dollars from the federal government. There was an amendment that was offered by Mike Pence that would end that subsidy, that grant to these organizations that kill babies. There are also a number of other pro-life riders that we want in there, and we should be willing to fight very hard--I mean, very aggressively and just say ‘look the country is in trouble as never before.’

"I was just telling these students from Mercer County, New Jersey, that the debt is already over 14 trillion. But by 2021, ten years from now, it will be 25.1 trillion, with a “t.”  That will undue any possibility of economic growth in this country. It will be like a sinkhole."

"When it comes to cutting funding—I mean I voted against Obamacare. I think it is socialized medicine, is a very, very grave mistake. It will end healthcare as we know it--for our seniors, for our working families, across the board. It is a very, very misguided and very duplicitous. A lot of things that were hidden which Earnest Istook and Heritage and others have all helped to ferret out -- Congressional Research Service has done that as well and said ‘This needs to be focused upon and it is not.’ We are going to do everything we can to repeal it. We already voted to repeal it. We are going to do it again and again until it is repealed. And then we need to make real changes in our health care system -- the kinds of which will offer alternatives to this massive misguided experiment called Obamacare.
