KNOXBORO, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities tell media outlets in central New York that a sheriff's deputy has died after being shot at the end of a five-hour standoff at a house.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Department tells WKTV-TV and the Observer-Dispatch that Deputy Kurt Wyman died after being rushed to a Utica hospital following a shootout around 2 a.m. Tuesday inside a garage in the rural hamlet of Knoxboro, 30 miles southeast of Syracuse.

Officials say the suspect, 41-year-old Chris Patterson, was shot several times by police and is in critical condition.

Authorities say police responded to a domestic dispute around 9 p.m. Monday at Patterson's home. They say Patterson was armed and had retreated to a garage when deputies arrived.

Officials say more information will be released during a news conference Tuesday morning.
