(CNSNews.com) - Planned Parenthood Federation of America is fighting a congressional attempt to end federal funding for the organization with a nationwide bus tour, dubbed the "Truth Tour." The organization's bright pink bus advertises various Planned Parenthood statistics and health data, but it does not include the number of abortions the organization has performed.
In 2009, Planned Parenthood clinics performed 332,278 abortions, according to a fact sheet on the group’s Web site. Also, in fiscal year 2008-2009, Planned Parenthood received more than $363 million in government grants and contracts, including federal taxpayer dollars through Title X family planning provisions.
Although federal law does not allow for taxpayer dollars to directly pay for abortion, critics of Planned Parenthood, which is the largest provider of abortions in the United States, say the millions of dollars it gets annually help it support other programs, thus freeing up funds that can be used to promote or perform abortions.
Planned Parenthood also has launched an ad campaign and e-mail blitz asking supporters to fight the congressional de-funding effort and to donate to their cause.
Legislative action to defund Planned Parenthood is working its way through Congress. Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) sponsored a bill to ensure that no federal tax dollars, across the board, will be used for abortion. Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) has introduced legislation to specifically defund Planned Parenthood.
“They’re spreading lies about Planned Parenthood health centers online, on the airwaves and in the halls of Congress,” an action alert e-mail from Planned Parenthood states.
Planned Parenthood’s e-mail also refers to another bus tour: the nationwide tour by the pro-life advocacy group Susan B. Anthony’s List, “Women Speak Out: Defund Planned Parenthood.” That tour is aimed at getting support for the de-funding Planned Parenthood effort and is making 11 stops while touring 13 districts where members of Congress voted against Pence’s amendment.
“The anti-choice extremists behind the effort to bar Planned Parenthood health centers from federal funding are on a tour to push lies and misinformation about who we are and what we do,” the e-mail says.
Figures displayed on the sides of the Planned Parenthood bus include “4,000,000 STD (sexually transmitted diseases) Tests”; “1,800,00 Cancer Screenings”; “2,500,000 Birth Control Patients”; and “830,000 Breast Exams.” The main banner on the bus reads, “Stand With Planned Parenthood.”
The statistics do not include the number of abortions performed at Planned Parenthood clinics, which were 332,278 in 2009, up by 8,270 from the 324,008 abortions performed in 2008, according to Planned Parenthood.
According to its latest annual report, Planned Parenthood listed its revenues at $1.1 billion.
On Tuesday, the SBA List’s tour was in Toledo, Ohio. Marilyn Musgrave, former Republican congresswoman and project director for SBA List's "Votes Have Consequences," did not mince words.
“The message is clear: not with our tax dollars,” Musgrave said. “We will accept nothing less than the total de-funding of Planned Parenthood.”
