(CNSNews.com) – Speaking at a press conference on the steps of the Capitol Wednesday, Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) compared House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to a gun-wielding attacker.

“Our message is simple: Speaker Boehner take the gun out of the head of this nation,” Cardin said.

Cardin and other Democrats at the press conference – many of whom support stricter gun control laws – said the partial government shutdown has hurt federal workers, 300,000 of which live in D.C., Northern Virginia and Maryland. However, Cardin said, the shutdown isn’t limited to the region.

“As Leader Reid pointed out, our entire country is at risk,” Cardin said. “Colorado just is starting to recover from the floods that really hurt its economy.

“This shutdown is having the same impact that the flood had on the economy of Colorado,” Cardin said.

“The big difference is you’ve gotta plan for natural disasters, but you can’t stop them,” Cardin said. “This is a government-created problem that government needs to solve.

“So our message is simple: Speaker Boehner take the gun out of the head of this nation,” Cardin said.

The talking points of the press conference were that the Democrats want to resolve the shutdown by first funding the government, then paying debts, “and let’s negotiate.”
