( – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that America needs a modern day Paul Revere to warn, "sequester is coming."

"I talk about the Fourth of July, about the health independence, but it’s also really time for us to sound the alarm," Pelosi said during a press conference on Capitol Hill.

"If Paul Revere were here today, we would need someone like him to be running through the street saying, 'Sequester is coming!'" She said. "Sequester is here, really," she added.

"A budget is needed," Pelosi continued. "This is very fundamentally important to the success of our country, to the survival of many here, to the strength of our military and as well as to the success of our economy."

House Democrats are pressing Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to work out a budget compromise with the Senate, which finally passed a budget bill a little over three months ago.

"So, we shouldn’t have any more time go by that we at least appoint conferees, hopefully meet as soon as we come back and resolve these differences," she said.  "The consequences are great."

The automatic across-the-board spending cuts, know as the sequester, went into effect on March 1. The cuts amount to $44 billion in 2013 spending, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Paul Revere famously warned the colonies before the battles of Lexington and Concord that the "British were coming," in America's fight for independence in the Revolutionary War.
