Albany, N.Y. (AP) - Republican candidate for governor Carl Paladino says he would lay off thousands of public workers to fix New York's fiscal crisis.
Paladino tells WGDJ-AM in Albany that Democratic Gov. David Paterson is right to order the layoffs of nearly 900 workers by Dec. 31. But he says more will be needed as early as January.
Speaking as state attorney general and the governor's lawyer, Democratic candidate Andrew Cuomo defended Paterson's cuts Thursday. But he stopped short of saying he would lay off workers if he becomes governor.
Paladino also says Friday he will eliminate the payroll tax that helps fund the New York City transit system and freeze fares and bridge tolls.
