(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama has rescheduled his speech at the Planned Parenthood event in Washington, D.C., from Thursday night to Friday morning, but the president will still be addressing an organization that performed one abortion every 94 seconds in one year.
According to its latest annual report for 2011-2012, Planned Parenthood Federation of America and its affiliated clinics performed 333,964 abortions in fiscal 2011. That averages one abortion every 94 seconds.
Pro-life groups have protested Obama’s speech in light of the murder trial of late-term abortionist Dr. Kermit Gosnell. Closing arguments in the case are scheduled to take place on Monday in Philadelphia.
On April 18, Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania held a gala where the head of the local affiliate said the focus should be on the “high-quality services” they provide, according to Philly.com:
"The Gosnell trial has shifted the focus off the high-quality services we provide," said Dayle Steinberg, the organization's president and chief executive. "These are criminal, horrendous ... acts and should be appropriately punished."
Steinberg said that when Gosnell was in practice, women would sometimes come to Planned Parenthood for services after first visiting Gosnell's West Philadelphia clinic, and would complain to staff about the conditions there.
"We would always encourage them to report it to the Department of Health," Steinberg said as she sat with feminist Gloria Steinem before Tuesday's events.
Of the Gosnell trial, Steinem said: "It makes more clear why you need Planned Parenthood."
The 333,964 abortions Planned Parenthood did in fiscal 2011 is an increase of 4,519 from the 329,445 abortions it did in 2010, according to a fact sheet that Planned Parenthood published last year.
Over two years, Planned Parenthood says, it has aborted 663,409.
The 2011-2012 report states that Planned Parenthood received $542.4 million in “government health services grants and reimbursements,” which it states includes “payments from Medicaid managed care plans.”
The report also shows that Planned Parenthood’s total assets top $1 billion dollars, specifically $1,244.7 billion.
