Washington (AP) - President Barack Obama says he thinks he can work with Republicans on energy and education.

The president cited those two issues after saying he sees "a whole bunch of areas we can agree on" with the GOP.

The president said the midterm election results showed voter frustration with the pace of economic recovery. The president said he takes "direct responsibility" for not making as much progress as necessary. But he avoided casting the results as a repudiation of his policies.

Democrats lost the House and lost ground in the Senate on Tuesday.

Obama spoke to reporters at a White House news conference on Wednesday.
