FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) — A 17-year-old New Mexico teen arrested on suspicion of bludgeoning a local doctor to death with a pool cue pleaded not guilty at his first court appearance.
John Mayes was in court Monday on charges he beat to death Dr. James Nordstrom and hid his body in a woodpile late Thursday in Nordstrom's secluded Farmington-area home.
Prosecutors say Mayes entered the house through an open door that led into the bedroom and waited for an hour before killing the doctor.
Police apprehended the teen the following day at a fast-food drive-thru while driving Nordstrom's truck.
The Farmington Daily Times reports Mayes will be tried as an adult.
He is the son of Farmington City Manager Rob Mayes.
