WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is promoting its new efforts to target criminal illegal immigrants for deportation.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will outline what she calls her department's "smart, effective enforcement" of the nation's immigration laws in a speech Wednesday at American University.

In the past week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has announced the arrests of nearly 3,000 criminal illegal immigrants who will now face deportation proceedings.

During a House hearing on how the administration decides who gets deported first, Customs Deputy Director Kumar Kibble said the department is effectively managing its resources by targeting criminals. He added that immigration enforcement hasn't been halted for non-criminals.
