(CNSNews.com) - First lady Michelle Obama, appearing on the "Tonight" show Monday, explained her awkward moment on the "kiss cam" at last month's exhibition basketball game between Team USA and Brazil.

"This is the background," she told host Jay Leno. "We had just -- the girls and I went somewhere else. We met him (President Obama) at the game. And I had just walked in and sat down, and I just saw my face on the Jumbotron. And I'm still a little embarrassed."

Mrs. Obama said she "didn't see the kiss cam part...So I didn't know we were supposed to kiss."

"And she was -- she was just disgusted with us. She said, ‘Why didn’t you kiss?’ And I was like, ‘Kiss what? What are you talking about?’ She’s like, ‘You were on the kiss cam. You were supposed to kiss.’ And I was, ‘We were like -- we were not paying attention.”

Mrs. Obama said Malia arranged the do-over, giving her parents a second opportunity to oblige the kiss cam.
