(CNSNews.com) – Speaking at the Brookings Institution on Friday, former Vice President Al Gore called Republican efforts to defund Obamacare through the continuing resolution “political terrorism.”

“Now I’m going to talk about the potential for a shutdown in just a moment, but I think the only phrase that describes it is political terrorism. Nice global economy you got there, it’d be a shame if we had to destroy it. We have a list of demands. If you don’t meet them all by our deadline, we’ll blow up the global economy,” Gore said. “Really?”

The Senate is completing work on a CR that funds the federal government at current sequester levels of $986.3 billion through Dec. 15 when the current CR ends on Sept. 30 defunds the Affordable Care Act. Conservatives are asking congressional Republicans to pass the CR in an effort to stop the full implementation of Obamacare, which begins Jan. 1.

“Where are the American people in this? Why does partisanship have anything to do with such a despicable and dishonorable threat to the integrity of the United States of America?” Gore asked. “It cannot be allowed.”

Gore said the only way to stop Republican efforts to defund Obamacare through the CR is for members of both political parties as well as independents to say: “‘Look, I might not agree with everything that is in the Affordable Care Act, but it did pass, it was upheld by the Supreme Court. It is the law of the land.

“‘You didn’t succeed in the constitutional process, by which this was considered, and now you want to threaten to not only shut down our government, but to blow up world economy unless we go back and undo what we did according to the processes of our democracy? How dare you? How dare you?’”
