(CNSNews.com) – With immigration reform emerging as a major issue this year, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) jokingly admitted last year that he could possibly lose his leadership post in the House if he brought immigration reform to the floor without the support of the GOP majority.

“Maybe,” Boehner responded in response to a reporter’s question during a press conference on immigration reform in Washington, D.C., on June 18, 2013.

“Speaker Boehner, Representative Rohrbacher said that if you bring immigration reform to the floor without the support of the GOP conference, you will lose your job. Do you think that’s accurate?” the reporter asked.

Rep. Dana Rohrbacher (R-Calif.) had warned that Boehner should be removed as speaker if he allowed a House vote on the Gang of Eight’s immigration reform bill without a GOP majority, the Hill reported on June 17, 2013.

Republicans wanted Boehner to adhere to the “Hastert rule,” which says that no bill should come to the House floor unless backed by a majority of the chamber’s majority party.
