(CNSNews.com) - President Donald Trump said Thursday that the shooting attack on Paris police “looks like another terrorist attack.”
A lone gunman fatally shot a police officer and wounded two others along the Champs-Elysees in Paris, according to French police. The gunman was then shot and killed while trying to flee the scene, the BBC reported.
“Well, first of all, our condolences from our country to the people of France. Again, it’s happening, it seems. I just saw it as I was walking in, so that’s a terrible thing and it’s a very, very terrible thing that’s going on in the world today, but it looks like another terrorist attack,” Trump said during a joint press conference at the White House with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.
French President Francois Hollande said he was convinced the incident was a terrorist attack.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack.
“What can you say -- it just never ends. We have to be strong and we have to be vigilant, and I’ve been saying it for a long time,” Trump said.
French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said the suspect - who is known by France’s security forces and had talked about wanting to kill police officers - pulled up alongside a police bus and opened fire. After he killed an officer, he tried to run away while shooting at the officers, but was shot dead by security forces.
