(CNSNews.com) – Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) tweeted a joke on Monday poking fun at Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, comparing him to the monkey that Iran recently claimed to have launched into space.

“So Ahmadinejad wants to be first Iranian in space -- wasn't he just there last week? ‘Iran launches monkey into space,’” McCain tweeted on Monday, linking to a Yahoo News story about the purported Iranian space launch.

Iran claimed to have successfully launched a monkey into space on January 28, saying it was a sign that the country had made significant progress on long-range rocketry.

McCain followed up with another tweet urging followers to “lighten up.”

“Re: Iran space tweet -- lighten up folks, can't everyone take a joke?” he said.

McCain’s joke was responding to a pronouncement from Ahmadinejad that the Iranian was ready to go into space himself.

“I am ready to be the first human to be sent to space by Iranian scientists,” Ahmadinejad said on Monday, according to Reuters.
